TITLE Tag and Search Engine Optimization

The TITLE tag is probably the one tag that has the strongest impact on the search engine optimization (SEO) of your web site. Almost all search engines, including Google, Bing and Yahoo, pay special attention to the TITLE tag. The TITLE tag impacts the search engine friendliness of your web pages in two different ways.
The page title impacts the ranking of your web page.

Web search engines index the text content inside your title tags and use it when ranking your website and what is even more important, the text in TITLE is given a higher priority than rest of the text on your web page. That is why you should make sure you have put enough keywords into the titles of your web pages.

The page title is displayed by Google (and other search engines) on the results page. When Google displays the link to your web page, it uses the page title as the text for that link. This means that the page title effects the clickthrough rate for the link. Whether the user will click on the link leading to your page or he will move on to the next link actually depends on the text of the title. Make sure that you use some meaningful text for your page title and that the title will attract the user’s attention and will make him click on the title. Mistakes most often made when setting the page titles for your website:

  • No title at all or an empty title. Many websites are edited using visual HTML editors that do not set a page title, or set some default title which is irrelevant to your website content. Same holds true for ready web templates – they don’t have relevant titles. That is why before you actually put your web pages online, you should edit their titles manually.
  • Using the same title for each and every page of your website. Using the same title for every page is a mistake even when the title contains relevant keywords and is actually able to attract the user’s attention. The more diverse your page titles are the higher the chance is that at least one of the page titles will catch the user’s eye and he will click on your link in the search results. Also different titles mean different content and therefore a higher chance that at least one of your pages will match the user’s search query in Google (or any other search engine).
